Dosing edibles without a bad night

Edibles are the most common way to overdo cannabis. A practical, unglamorous guide to picking a dose, waiting long enough, and what to do if you go too far.

Almost every uncomfortable edible story starts the same way: someone ate a normal-looking dose, felt nothing after forty minutes, ate more, and then found out what the first dose was going to do.

Start at 2.5 to 5 mg, not 10

Ten milligrams is a common serving size on a package, but that is a serving for an experienced consumer, not for a first-timer. If you are new to edibles, take half a gummy, which is 5 mg, or a quarter if you are cautious. You can always take more tomorrow.

Wait two hours, every time

Edibles go through the digestive system, which means a forty to ninety minute onset and a peak somewhere between two and four hours. The mistake is judging the dose at forty minutes. Set a timer and do not top up before it goes off.

Eating something fatty alongside your dose can speed absorption and make it hit harder. An empty stomach is unpredictable in both directions.

Build a routine instead of guessing

If you use edibles for sleep, take the same dose at the same time for a few nights before adjusting. Keep a note of what you took and how it went. Most people find their number within a couple of weeks, and it is usually lower than they expect.

If you take too much

It is unpleasant, not dangerous. Cannabis does not cause respiratory depression the way alcohol or opioids can. What helps: sit somewhere comfortable, drink water, eat something mild, put on something familiar, and remind yourself that it will pass in a few hours. Black pepper and CBD are popular folk remedies with limited evidence, but there is no harm in either.

Do not drive, do not add alcohol, and if you have a heart condition or you are on medication, call a nurse line rather than waiting it out alone.

Keep it out of reach

Cannabis edibles look like candy. Store them locked or high up, separate from food, and never in a bag that a child could mistake for snacks. This is the one part of edible safety where the risk is genuinely serious.

The short version

Start low, wait two hours, repeat the same dose before changing it, and treat the jar like medicine rather than sweets.
